100th Anniversary C&O Railroad Bridge Ornament
The Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail has minted a special collectors ornament celebrates the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Railroad Bridge, which has been a landmark at Sciotoville, Ohio for 100 years.
The 1,550 ft. bridge spans the Ohio River between Ohio and Kentucky and was designed by Gustav Lindenthal, who also designed the Hells Gate Bridge in New York City, among many other bridges.
Lindenthal's designs were influenced by his quest for perfection and his love of art. His structures not only serve the purpose they were designed for, but were also aesthetically pleasing. At the time of its competition, the bridge was the largest continuous riveted truss bridge in the world.
The first coal train crossed the bridge on July 31, 1917 and the bridge continues in use today by the CSX Railroad.
The C&O Railroad Bridge special edition ornament is available for $15.00 by calling Debbie at 740-821-0999 or Bill at 740-357-2070 or from any other Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail Committee member.
